Popular Flavonoid, Rutin, As Preventive Therapy Against Blood Clots, Strokes and Heart Attacks

Rutin in Buckwheat
Rutin is a citrus flavonoid glycoside found in certain fruits and vegetables.

Major sources for rutin are buckwheat, fruit of the fava d'anta tree in Brazil, fruits and flowers of the pagoda tree, citrus fruits (orange, grapefruit, lemon, lime) and berries such as mulberry, ash tree fruits and cranberries.

It is a plant pigment that is believed to strengthen blood vessels and prevent strokes due to damaged veins and arteries. Rutin is also used to alleviate pain from mucositis that causes swelling and ulcer formation.

Flavonoid compound found in foods and supplements shown to prevent the formation of blood clots

A compound called rutin, commonly found in fruits and vegetables and sold over the counter as a dietary supplement, has been shown to inhibit the formation of blood clots in an animal model of thrombosis.

These new findings, led by investigators at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) and published in today's on-line issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation (JCI), identify a novel strategy for preventing thrombosis, and help pave the way for clinical testing of this popular flavonoid as a therapy for the prevention and treatment of stroke and heart attack, as well as deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism.
